What are Mind-Body Symptoms?
Your symptoms are not “all in your head”. Mind-body symptoms, also known as psychophysiologic disorders (PPD) or functional medical problems, are real physiological symptoms—aches, pains, discomfort, muscle tension, or dysfunction in some part of your body—that do not have a clear-cut cause and therefore do not have a sure-fire cure. Whereas physicians are able to detect and localize dysfunction in the body when it comes to organic problems or disease, mind-body symptoms or PPD are typically diagnosed when there is no evidence for organic dysfunction or disease. Even if you are not able to pinpoint a clear cause for your symptoms, they are not imaginary, and your body can heal from them.

If your medical problem is not on the list, ask your physician if it is considered a functional medical problem/psychophysiologic disorder. If it is, then Dr. Franklin’s educational material should be appropriate for you. If you still have questions, contact Dr. Franklin.
It may be extremely disappointing and frustrating to be given a diagnosis without a medication or surgery to definitively rid you of your symptoms for good, but it is actually good news. Your body is structurally sound and free of any life-threatening disease.
Your body is capable of functioning normally even if it has not been behaving normally lately. Do not be discouraged by the fact that you have tried various treatment modalities that have not resulted in a full recovery. You can still heal and recover.
I have had both personal experience of recovering from PPD and specialized professional experience in working with people who have PPD or mind-body symptoms.
