Welcome to the “Don’t Hate Your Guts” blog and video series!
As a licensed psychologist specializing in the treatment of digestive problems like Irritable Bowel Syndrome, I see firsthand the frustration caused by a medical diagnosis with no clear cause. IBS, like functional dyspepsia, chronic constipation, and cyclic vomiting, is often referred to as a functional gastrointestinal disorder. Because they lack a physiological cause, these functional GI disorders also have no sure-fire medical cure.
I know functional GI disorders inside and out, and not just because I treat patients who are struggling with them. I had IBS myself. I was diagnosed with IBS as a teenager. Over a period of years I discovered how to heal from IBS. In fact, I made a full recovery.
How do I define a full recovery from IBS?
For 20 years, all of the following has been true for me:
- I no longer suffer from regularly occurring, persistent, or chronic digestive symptoms.
- I eat what I want without restriction.
- I plan my day-to-day life without worrying whether or not IBS symptoms will interfere with my plans.
- I am not taking any IBS-related medications, nor do I need to keep such medications in my home.
If reading those statements gives you hope, I’m glad you’re here. I want to help you recover from IBS, or whatever digestive problem you’re experiencing, by sharing what I have learned over the past 30 years. I’m less interested in helping you manage your IBS symptoms and much more interested in helping you to be free of your symptoms once and for all. Managing IBS symptoms is one step towards the end-goal, but it does not have to be the end goal.
Since 2001, I have been working primarily with patients who suffer from digestive symptoms. I’ve also worked side-by-side with some of the top physicians in the world at a premier integrative medical center for treating functional GI disorders like IBS. This combination of life and clinical experience has led me to believe that a full recovery from IBS is possible.
