COURSE DESCRIPTION

This introductory webinar, intended for psychotherapists, physicians, nutritionists, dietitians, bodyworkers, and other healthcare professionals, offers essential clinically sound information about working at the intersection of the digestive system and nervous system with patients who have Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and other digestive symptoms.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and digestive symptoms indicate dysregulation of the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS), part of which is in the gut. While the primary symptoms may be physiological, the nature of the dysregulation is likely not purely physiological.

Understanding ANS dysregulation through the lens of Polyvagal Theory will help you to more effectively and efficiently facilitate healing for your patients/clients. This webinar will also address working with stress, anxiety or panic attacks. This webinar provides foundational learning for those less familiar with Polyvagal Theory while also adding knowledge about the digestive system and healing the gut for Somatic Experiencing® Practitioners and others more familiar with Polyvagal Theory.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

The learning objectives for this Brain Gut Connection webinar are for attendees to be able to:

  1. Define Polyvagal Theory and assess the Autonomic Nervous System dysregulation that generates, exacerbates, and/or perpetuates digestive disorders like Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
  2. List the symptoms of dysregulation.
  3. Identify and define how stress, anxiety, and trauma relate to digestive disorders through the lens of Polyvagal Theory.

What Health-Care Practitioners Say About This Webinar

Dr Franklin provides a thorough overview of the issues underlying chronic conditions such as Irritable Bowel Symptoms (IBS). Her unique body-mind perspective takes into consideration the most cutting-edge approaches to understanding the nervous system and the gut-brain connection. This webinar is practical and clear, providing you with some helpful guidance in working with this unique population. I highly recommend this webinar for mental health professionals, dietitians, and all types of providers working with IBS. This webinar will support you in gaining perspective about the role of right-brain experiences in healing so that clients can start to move into deeper states of regulation, reduce symptoms, and support normative digestive processes. —Paula Scatoloni, LCSW, CEDS, SEP, Co-Developer of Embodied Recovery Institute

Functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) are a major burden on the individuals who suffer from them and on the healthcare system. In this webinar Dr. Franklin expertly introduces the participant to this complex territory with clarity and compassion. In framing IBS and other FGIDs through a biopsychosocial lens she offers an approach that is vital to the training of psychiatrists who face these problems routinely. My psychiatry residents would do well to learn from Dr. Franklin about the relationship between neurobiology, attachment, trauma, somatic regulation, psychodynamics and resilience. In this way they can develop a truly integrative, holistic framework for understanding and treating their patients with FGIDs and somatic symptom disorders more generally.
Joshua Pretsky, MD, DFAPA, Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA

This webinar is very informative. Well worth your time! —Heather Patterson Meyer, Psy.D., LP, HSP-P

This was an excellent training. It was a clear, concise and engaging presentation with compelling reinforcement of the fact that the body and mind are fully integrated and the skill of internal regulation is essential to health. I’m grateful for the work Dr Franklin is providing to the community. —Molly Soper Yates, LCSW

Dr. Franklin is a wonderful teacher; I really enjoyed her class! She explains things well, and in a way that I think patients would understand and get a lot out of. I hope to use some of these teaching methods with my patients, and I believe they will prove very beneficial! I look forward to taking additional classes with Dr. Franklin. —Dr. Nicole DiNezza, DC, NTP

Dr. Franklin holds the missing key to helping clinicians guide their clients/patients not simply to manage but actually to heal their stress/trauma-driven GI woes. She articulates the science of the brain-gut connection in clear, accessible language. Her approach has been forged by her own journey through her own recovery from IBS along with years of diligent study and clinical practice. She illuminates a roadmap to success that is both attuned to the individual and guided by leading-edge research. —Julia Corley, LCMHC, NCC, SEP, Certified Hakomi Teacher

Dr. Franklin presents a very informative two hour presentation on Polyvagal Theory for any professional who works with IBS or related functional medical concerns. How many of our patients have digestive problems? At least 30% of mine do, and they are always surprised to hear how that relates to their mental well-being. Dr. Franklin really breaks the topic down to help us understand the systems that are at play. In fact, I learned more from her than from other direct training on this topic. This program was invaluable, and my patients have already benefited from it.—Jessica Gregg, MA, MSEd, LPC

This talk was informative. It gave me more specifics on how the Autonomic Nervous System works and solidified my understanding of how to facilitate regulation both for myself and my clients. —Anonymous Psychotherapist

This is profound and important work. Dr. Franklin’s presentation was clear, concise and informative. It has expanded my understanding of Polyvagal Theory and how the development of safe, secure attachment, or lack thereof, can have a profound effect on healing the mind/body. Thank you, Dr. Franklin. I look forward to your next presentation. —Anonymous Healthcare Professional
